The Expectation of Achievement

OR … 6 years without major Honours

Undeniably one of the major three clubs in British football Arsenal’s last major honour was 2004 winning the Premier League in a team of Invincibles with players like Robert Pires, Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, Jens Lehmann and others. All of a sudden this year the commentary by the pundits are that the fans expect to win something. This I believe has lead to Arsene Wenger pitting strong Arsenal teams against unwitting opponents like Newcastle and Spurs in the Carling Cup.

Is it massively important that Arsenal win something? I’m in two minds about this honestly because we’ve had no worse than a top four finish in the last 6 years and we’ve come close to winning the League and Championship league only to be let down by squad injuries like RVP last year. That’s the accepting side of me that understands that we continue to bring on young talent like Wilshere, Fabregas, Clichy, Bendtner that will make Arsenal legendary in the future as well as bringing in some almost-finished articles like Chamakh, Koscielny and Squillaci.

However the other side of the argument is that we’ve had the ability to win the Carling and F.A cup throughout those 6 years. If we had put more focus on them to ensure we qualified for the next round. I appreciate this means tired players and a lack of focus on the premier league, which may alter our final lague performance position, but we have built a successful club over years.

We do not have the coffers of Chelsea or Man City to buy a world class team or the fortunes of Manchester Utd in the early years of the Premier league to have been established as a destination club. Our club has worked hard to win trophies, attract the right players to the club, build an artistic style of football and develop young talent. All of this takes time and I believe that this years’ squad is capable of winning multiple trophies especially given the weakness of Liverpool, Chelsea and Man Utd this year.

I personally expect either the Carling Cup and FA Cup or the Premier League to be one this year. I’m confident we’ll qualify in the Champions League but the draw is too erratic to speculate on whether we’ll get through to the semi’s or the final. However we have the squad capable and we should be winning with the players we have.
